    荷蘭推動循環經濟成績斐然,各國爭相觀摩,讓這個人口不到1700萬人的北海小國,成為關注焦點。且看他們如何推行資源永續循環?

    今年元月,「COP21巴黎氣候會議」才落幕一個月,荷蘭帶自己走向了歷史的轉捩點。

    「人類正面臨嚴峻的環境挑戰,處於歷史當口的我們必須尋找具體解方,而『循環經濟』指引了一條明路,讓我們能夠在經濟、生態與社會問題上,做系統性的改變……,」熱心於環境議題的荷蘭王子卡洛斯(prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme),公開宣示荷蘭力拚成為「國際循環經濟熱點」(Netherlands Circular Hotspot,NLCH)??逅股砑鍺LCH專案的主席。

    這可不是政治宣言,喊喊口號而已。今年上半年,荷蘭擔任輪值歐盟主席,就積極倡議循環經濟,更在4月份於史基浦機場物流園區舉辦「循環經濟特展」(CIRCULAR EXPO),向世界展示產業轉型的可能。

    如今走在荷蘭各大小市區,許多角落已可見到NLCH的圓圈標章。這是循環經濟中的典型模型:「封閉的循環系統」(closed-loop),表彰資源永續循環利用。

    「從搖籃到搖籃」 讓資源永續

    愈來愈多荷蘭人與企業,開始學著「打圈圈」。

    這個人口不到1700萬人的北海小國,成為全世界最積極的循環經濟倡議大國。為什麼如此大聲疾呼?循環經濟(Circular Economy)為何躍上國際,成為當紅關鍵字?

    早在1960年代,美國經濟學家波爾?。↘enneth Boulding)就提出循環經濟的概念。

    一直到2010年,單人遊艇環遊世界的女性全球紀錄保持人艾倫.麥克阿瑟(Ellen MacArthur)創立了同名基金會,這也成為了目前推動循環經濟最知名的核心組織,才進一步炒熱該議題。

    因為崇尚「從搖籃到搖籃」(cradle to cradle)的資源永續理念,艾倫.麥克阿瑟基金會與合作伙伴、管理顧問公司麥肯錫在2012年於達沃斯世界經濟論壇,提出了全球第一本探討循環議題的報告「邁向循環經濟報告」。

    報告一出,世人矚目,激發了一波波產業與政策回響。

    達沃斯世界經濟論壇(WEF)在2014年將循環經濟列入論壇的六大計畫之一。隔年,歐盟(EU)也公布「循環經濟推動計畫」,希望以政策力量帶動產業轉型。

    據歐盟估計,採取廢棄物防治、環保設計、再利用等循環手段,可以節省約6000億歐元的淨利、等於多賺8%年營收,並減少歐洲企業的溫室氣體排放達2~4%。

    若擴大到全球範疇,經濟效益又有多大?2014年出版的「邁向循環經濟報告」第三版,指出光是材質回收、再利用的跨產業合作項目,就能在五年內創造出5億美元產值、10萬個新工作機會,並且避免一億噸的材料浪費。

    核心精神1〉從3R到5R

    重新設計產品 易拆解、回收、再利用

    只是,究竟什麼是「循環經濟」?

    爆紅不過四年的循環經濟,其實不算新名詞,甚至不是新觀念,但卻可能是另一種嶄新的商業思惟與模式。

    「以前,我們談永續(sustainability)是減低傷害,例如減少製造廢棄物;現在,談循環經濟,則是有較系統性的思考,用對的手段把事情做好!」負責永續財務策略的荷蘭ING銀行副總奈柏(Gerald Naber)解釋,像是重新設計產品、使之容易拆解、回收、再利用,就是從源頭解決廢棄物的具體模式。

    艾倫.麥克阿瑟基金會給循環經濟的簡單定義,共三大原則:首先,強調「使用」,而非擁有;第二,儘可能延長產品與資源的使用期限;第三,設計易於拆解、重組的無毒產品,並使用再生能源。

    「循環經濟,就是來自於對『線性經濟』(Linear Economy)的反思!」奈柏說,傳統線性經濟有三個階段;開採、製造、丟棄,各環節的成本都高。

    「線性經濟走到盡頭,是該轉彎了!」剛接下臺糖董事長、資源循環臺灣基金會創辦人黃育徵表示,地球面臨資源用盡的挑戰,唯有讓資源不斷利用,成為封閉的循環系統,才是解方。

    他表示,廢棄物其實是「被錯置的資源」,循環經濟的最終極目標就是「零廢棄」。為此,在產業價值鏈的源頭就必須系統性思考,否則走到終端就容易面臨產品無法回收再利用的窘境。

    因此,在傳統的3R:Reduce(減量)、Recycle(回收)與Reuse(再利用)之外,還得加上2R:Redefine、Redesign。亦即,重新定義並重新設計產品與服務模式。

    目前循環經濟最著名的例子之一,就是全球第一支模組化手機、荷蘭手機品牌Fairphone。

    籌辦荷蘭「循環經濟特展」的社會企業家布朗(Guido Braam)指出,Fairphone與供應鏈社群合作,針對容易損壞的零組件(例如螢幕)模組化,壞了或想要升級都能單獨抽換,延長整支手機的壽命。

    供應鏈重新設計,也創造新商業模式。以「使用」(usage)代替「擁有權」(ownership),正是核心價值。

    125週年的燈具大廠飛利浦,近年推出燈具租賃方案,不賣燈泡,改賣維修、智慧照明等套裝服務。同時也開啟逆物流(reverse logistics),擴大回收網絡,延長產品與原料的壽命。

    近月來經常受邀演講的黃育徵,也常舉得過環保大獎的化學品服務公司SAFECHEM為例子。

    金屬製品製造商需要化學溶劑來清潔金屬表面,由SAFECHEM提供化學租賃方案,包括出租清潔機器。SAFECHEM是以月費,或清潔金屬的分量大小,來做不同方案的計價,而不是傳統的「(溶劑)賣愈多、賺愈多」。

    在化學租賃方案中,金屬製品製造商不需花費太多錢,而SAFECHEM則必須研發更有效率的機器,讓溶劑可在機器中循環使用,並搭配更多加值服務,才能擴大獲利。

    這種創造對製造商、客戶與環境等多贏局面的做法,使得溶劑可有效回收,整體消耗減少八成、有害廢氣物降低九成。

    核心精神2〉租用而非買斷

    考驗企業如何做大附加價值

    迥異於線性經濟中慣有的「一次賣/買斷」,循環經濟中更常見「租用」「單次使用付費」等方式,使得財務模組,也必須調整。去年五月,ING銀行就發表一份報告:《在循環經濟中,重新思考金融角色》。

    「租用而非買斷,這將會增加營運資金的成本,以及償付風險!」奈柏表示,

    一直以來,製造商賣出一套商品,就能回本、獲利;但用租的,租期可能長達數年,延長回本與獲利的期限,製造商必須用其他方式來回填成本支出,也大大增加了營運風險。

    而對金融體系造成的主要挑戰,包括如何進行企業價值的「估價」。由於循環經濟才在萌芽階段,因此金融體系可能必須及早定義出模型來評估循環企業的價值。

    「雖然挑戰重重,但得及早面對,」奈柏說,好消息是循環經濟不只是道德呼籲,而是有具體獲利模式,潛在商機值得期待。

    當然,這考驗著企業如何做大附加價值。

    核心精神3〉團體戰加速腳步

    連結社群之力 打造全新價值鏈

    從「線性經濟」轉移到「循環經濟」,典範轉移的過程是否曠日廢時?如何加快腳步?

    「找朋友來幫你!」史基浦機場所在地的「哈勒默梅爾市」(Haarlemmermeer City)副市長倪德泰(John Nederstigt)說,連結社群之力才能有效整合供應鏈,打造出全新價值鏈。這個機場城市正在打造數個貿易園區,成為循環經濟聚落。

    今年初荷蘭宣稱舉國皆為「循環經濟熱點」,顯然有備而來。三大港口城市:「空港」──阿姆斯特丹、「海港」──鹿特丹與「智慧港」──恩荷芬,接力遞出循環城市白皮書。

    同時,已有超過25家循環大使企業與組織,站出來帶頭示範,包括飛利浦、ING集團、西門子、史基浦機場、鹿特丹港、Delta開發集團等。其中多家已是艾倫.麥克阿瑟基金會號召成立的「CE 100」的成員,早在國際上形成100家產業協力平臺,開始「創新1000天」計畫。

    根據荷蘭最大研究機構TNO估計,轉向循環經濟將為荷蘭帶來每年超過70億歐元產值、5萬個工作機會,並減少1700萬噸碳排放。

    聲勢浩蕩,荷蘭儼然已是全球循環經濟的領頭羊。駐臺的荷蘭貿易暨投資辦事處代表紀維德(Guy Wittich)指出,荷蘭約七成原物料仰賴進口,和臺灣很像,都是資源匱乏的小國,「走向循環,才有未來!」

    今年蔡英文總統在就職演說上,特別提出「要走向循環經濟時代,將廢棄物轉變為資源」,可說是正式啟動了臺灣循環經濟元年。

    「臺灣承諾在2030年減少2005年溫室氣體排放量的20%,大家別再問做不做得到,該問怎麼做?」黃育徵疾呼,臺灣經濟也該轉個彎,進一步學著畫個圈了。

    我們看到一個「以使用取代購買」的趨勢。不賣燈泡,而提供照明服務; 不賣飛機引擎,而以飛行時數計價;化學品的使用也可以用「租賃」的!

    我們生活中大多數的產品在生產過程中,會使用到各式各樣的化學品,像催化劑、溶劑、研磨液、清潔劑等,都是製程中所不可或缺的。這些化學品被使用後,絕大多數的業者都會花錢,請具有專業知識的回收業者妥善加以處理,但有些業者為了省成本或貪一時之便,會隨地傾倒,嚴重破壞環境和生態。

     

    從永續的角度來看,廢棄化學品帶來的汙染是應該、也可以被避免的!使用後的化學品經過良好處理,不但能再次成為高值的化學品,業者還能從「廢棄」的化學品中萃取貴重元素。以晶圓生產過程為例,將使用後的廢硫酸純化,取出裡面的銅,變成硫酸液和可作為靶材的純銅來循環使用,大大地提升了資源使用效率。

     

    以循環經濟的精神來看,化學品「使用者」其實並不需要以「買斷」的模式來擁有這些化學品,因為業者只需要「使用」化學品所提供的功能,使用業者可以改採「化學品租賃(chemical leasing)」的服務模式。

     

    化學品從「賣斷」變成「服務租賃」的商業模式,對供應商而言會是一大挑戰,但也是一個轉型的契機。傳統賣越多賺越多「以量計價」的模式,變成以提供「服務功能」來計價後,供應商可以用更少劑量來提供同等功能,減少原物料需求。租賃服務模式,有益供應商建立高技術成分、高附加價值的核心能力,墊高競爭業者的進入門檻。

     

    國際上已有許多廠商採化學品租賃的先例,以SAFECHEM汽車金屬製品的洗劑為例,傳統的販售模式每年消耗三十噸溶劑,產生二十五噸有害廢棄物。改用化學品租賃模式後,租借整套清洗機臺與洗劑給使用者,讓洗劑可以被循環使用,結果溶劑消耗減少八○%、有害廢棄物降低九五%,每年可以省下十萬歐元的成本。

     自2017年11月15日至11月17日,四介(SKIES)針對索愷化學(SAFECHEM)產品進行了為期三天的集訓,集團內的清洗專家齊聚一堂交換在不同區域、行業、及應用上的實務案例,有效提高整體清洗技術知識水平,以期為客戶提供更為專業的工業清洗解決方案。

    From Nov. 15th to Nov. 17th, 2017, SKIES held a professional training, named ‘Great Ambition: Being a Professional Cleaning Solution Lead’, focusing on SAFECHEM solutions. All cleaning solution teammates had a chance to exchange their practices from different regions, industries, and applications in order to provide more professional cleaning solutions to customers.

     

    訓練主要目的有三:進一步了解SAFECHEM的經營哲學、營運模式及環保概念;以”專業清洗方案顧問”的定位,熟悉并推廣SAFECHEM的整體清洗解決方案;透過個案研討及跨區客戶實例討論,進一步推廣潔凈清洗方案之宏大目標。

    The main training purposes are to understand the business model, operation concept and eco-economic philosophy within ‘SAFECHEM’; to promote SAFECHEM better in a professional cleaning solution adviser role, and reach the goal of ‘promoting clean cleaning solutions’ by real case studies and practices among Asia Pacific region.

    The camp was highly appreciated by David Chen, the General Manager of SAFECHEM China. In the camp, Shanghai Cleaning Team provided various materials, including ‘Market Request’, ‘Environmental Protection Regulations’, ‘Products Technology’ and ‘Site Visit to vacuum closed cleaning machine manufacturer’. The last part of camp is “real case study”.  The sufficient, reasonable and optimal cleaning solutions for the specific customized requirements from different industries/applications were provided and deeply discussed.

    隨著環保壓力的激增,在換熱器行業中,各種傳統高效的三氯乙烯或者酸堿清洗方式正在被逐步禁止。新型清洗溶劑改性醇醚(DOWCLENE 1601)是一款環保、無毒,配合新一代的真空全密閉清洗方式,不僅能夠提供高效的清洗效果,而且也有效的降低溶劑消耗與廢液排放。

    In heat exchanger industry, several traditional effective cleaning processes are going to be forbidden under environmental protection pressure, such as Trichloroethylene and Acid-Akali degreasing. Modified alcohol (DOWCLENE 1601), a new, environmental-friendly and low-toxic cleaning solvent, working with last-generation of vacuum-closed degreasing method can not only provide high cleaning results, but also decrease solvent consumption and waste discharge.  

     

    此外,多種增值服務(測試套裝、穩定劑和實驗室服務)可以有效延長溶劑的使用壽命,增加溶劑的循環次數。

    In addition, various value addition service like test-kit, stabilizer and lab services can effectively extend solvent shelf life and increase recycling times.

     

    貴州永紅率先采用該清洗方案,鋁材的表面張力測試輕松通過42號。有效提升一次真空釬焊成功率,減少鋁材消耗縮短工藝時間。

    Guzhou Yonghong is the first Chinese company apply this solution. The aluminum after degreasing can easily pass No. 42 Dyne test. This help them increasing once vacuum-brazing success rate and reducing raw material consumption. As a consequence, their production period is shorter than before.

     

    作為中國換熱器生產基地,馬山地區擁有全世界40%的板翅式換熱器產能。當地環保局對于改性醇醚清洗方案表示認可。

    As the production base of heat exchangers in China, Mashan area own 40% capacity of world plate-fin heat exchanger production. The modified alcohol degreasing solution has been approved by local government.

    自去年6月以來,國際原油價格自高位已經跌去大半,作為國際原油標桿的布倫特原油走勢不斷刷新市場對于油價底線的預判。石油的黃金時代是否已經過去?

    在一些人看來,低油價會讓整個石油行業壽命更長。

    油價高點難再企及跌破50美元的原油似乎成為原油價格史上的一個標志性事件,目前的布倫特原油和WTI原油較2014年年初已經分別下跌了55%49%。

    中海油能源經濟研究院首席研究員陳衛東預計,國際油價會在40美元到50美元之間盤整一段時間,目前無法判斷油價是否會跌穿40美元。

    油價走到了U形的底部,接下來的走向取決于資本市場的投資判斷,目前這種價格,幾乎對于所有生產商而言,都是不利的。陳衛東說道。

    民生證券石化能源研究員陶貽功則認為,現在原油的價格應該位于底部,繼續下行的空間有限,但短期也很難有大的反彈。

    主要原因是從鉆井到出油的時間約為8個月~10個月,今年上半年全球原油產量仍將保持增長,但從下半年開始,油價下跌導致油氣公司縮減勘探開發投資的影響將逐步顯現,預計油價也會逐步向上反彈,反彈高度預計在60美元~70美元/桶。陶貽功說道。

    在原油市場明顯供需失衡,石油輸出國組織(OPEC)與美國頁巖油生產商又僵持不下不愿減產導致油價持續下跌的情況下,石油生產方的壓力不斷增大。

    新年伊始,美國得克薩斯州頁巖油氣開采商WBHEnergyLP由于貸款人拒絕提供更多資金而申請破產保護,成為第一家扛不住油價下跌而倒下的頁巖油生產商。據悉,WBHEnergy公司面臨1000~5000萬美元的債務。

    有業內人士分析稱:美國相對比較好的頁巖油企業主要集中在得克薩斯州,現在這個州都已經有生產商破產了,預計油價持續下滑將會有更多的頁巖油公司破產。

    油價下跌四重奏

    在陳衛東看來,石油的黃金時代已經過去。國際原油市場上最重要的四個國家,沙特、俄羅斯、美國、中國正在上演著四重奏,這也是導致油價下跌的主要原因。

     

    具體來看,在這些國家到底發生著什么呢?

    沙特作為最大的產油國,一直堅稱不會減產,其目的不外乎希望通過低油價打壓美國頁巖油以及可替代能源的發展。陳衛東認為,沙特其實并不希望油價過高,因此試圖通過降價爭奪市場份額,沙特的一位官員曾說過,如果油價到200美元,沙特會亡國。因為高油價會極大促進可替代能源的發展,降價反而可以保護自己,爭奪市場份額。

    再看俄羅斯,這是一個最希望增加石油出口的國家。目前俄羅斯通過下調能源出口稅與提高資源稅,促進能源企業出口,保證財政收入,吸引海外離岸資金回流。盡管俄羅斯政府使出渾身解數,但市場對于俄羅斯經濟短期前景并不看好。中國社科院俄歐亞所研究員張弘認為,未來隨著新能源和新技術革命不斷推進,俄羅斯經濟難有起色,普京提出的振興俄羅斯的計劃預計也會擱淺。

    值得一提的是,與此前歷史上3次油價大幅下跌相比,本輪油價下跌與以往最大的不同,是可替代能源的發展。陳衛東表示:以往的1986年、1998年,以及2009年的油價下跌都沒出現可替代能源,而2014年這一次出現了。此次主要是儲能技術的發展,未來這項技術的發展將對石油等化石能源產生深遠的影響。

    近兩年來,美國頁巖油在技術進步的推動下,產量不斷攀升,造成需求過剩,美國作為最大的石油生產國,也是最大的消費國,油價下跌將進一步促進頁巖油技術的發展。陳衛東認為:美國增加頁巖油產量拉低油價這一動作其實是為了延續石油的壽命。

    強化大中華區熱塑性聚氨酯(TPU)領導地位,國際化工大廠巴斯夫昨(8)日與熱塑性聚氨酯(TPU)接著劑原料領先生產商臺灣欣順(TWSS)達成最終協議,收購其在臺灣與大陸的業務和資產。

    巴斯夫表示,收購案預計2015年完成,并展開整合工作推動。欣順董事長兼總經理周學文也將在收購完成后,以巴斯夫顧問身分,繼續管理欣順業務。

    巴斯夫去年全球銷售額約740億歐元,其中,特性材料業務部全球銷售額達65億歐元。

    臺灣欣順為領先的TPU制造商,產品銷往全球25個國家。工廠占地總面積24,000平方公尺,年產能20,000公噸,加上子公司大陸中山寶瑄科技5,000公噸的年產能,總年產能達25,000公噸。

    巴斯夫特性材料業務部負責人楊銳(Raimar Jahn)指出,此次收購是巴斯夫系統性推動TPU市場成長策略之一。欣順一直走在TPU接著劑的創新前端,欣順產品將為巴斯夫TPU產品組合提升附加價值。

    日經新聞報導,日本觸媒株式會社(Nippon Shokubai Co)17日宣布,將在2020年度結束前砸下1,500億日圓擴增紙尿布材料「高分子吸水樹脂(SAP)」及作為SAP原料的「丙烯酸(Acrylic acid)」產能,目標為將SAP年產能較現行(56萬噸)提高5成。

    日本觸媒表示,將在2020年度結束前分別興建3座年產能達9萬噸的SAP廠房及年產能達8萬噸的丙烯酸廠房,另外也將再額外興建一座年產能達16萬噸的丙烯酸廠房。日本觸媒指出,除了日本國內的川崎、千葉廠區之外,美國、印度尼西亞等現有工廠廠區皆是上述新廠房可能坐落的地點,而最終的興建地點將在今年夏天作出決定。

    據日經指出,因嬰幼兒紙尿布需求強勁,帶動SAP全球需求量預估將以年增7-8%的速度呈現增長,故日本觸媒計劃藉由積極擴增日本國內外產能來滿足需求。

    日經表示,日本觸媒主力生產據點「姬路制造所」于20129月發生火災事故后,就拖累SAP產量大幅下滑、也迫使日本觸媒停止進行新投資,惟因姬路制造所已于今年2月完全復原,而包含姬路制造所在內的全球5座工廠產能利用率也急速回復,提振日本觸媒SAP全球市占率已回復至火災事故前的25%以上水平,也讓日本觸媒愿意重啟投資。

    加州加強消費品安全法規(California Safer Consumer Product Regulations, SCP)公布第一批含有候選化學品之初始優先產品清單,包括:

    1.含有未反應二異氰酸酯(unreacted diisocyanates)之噴霧聚胺甲酸酯發泡體(或噴霧聚氨酯泡沫) (SPF)

    2.含有參(1,3-二氯-2-丙基)磷酸酯(Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphateTDCPP 的兒童泡沫塑料軟墊睡眠產品

    3.含有二氯甲烷(methylene chloride)的油漆、亮光漆去除劑及表面清潔劑

     

    什麼是優先產品?

    優先產品係指含有一種或一種以上候選化學品,具傷害人體與環境之危害特性的消費品。SCP要求加州毒性化學物質管理部(DTSC)2014428日以前公布優先產品初始清單草案。優先產品清單草案完成相關立法程序前,不具法規效力。

    指定的理由?

    上述三項產品及候選化學品之指定是根據SCP規範:

    一、產品可能使大眾或環境暴露在一項或多項候選化學品之下;

    二、暴露可能導致「顯著或大範圍的不良影響」。

    這三項產品已經遭禁用了嗎?

    優先產品初始清單是法規未來正式上路的前製作業,這份初始清單須經由立法程序納入SCP規範,正式納入後優先產品之製造商必須向DTSC通報並展開替代分析(AA)。最後DTSC會根據廠商的替代分析報告要求廠商配合相關的管理決策,包括產品標示到禁止銷售。

    初始清單公告之後,DTSC將於美在20145、6月間舉辦三場公開說明會,向利害關係人說明3項含有候選化學品之優先產品。2014年下半年度優先產品初始清單將進入立法程序,估計需要一年時間。

    慧聰塑料網訊:據美國塑料新聞消息,市場咨詢機構弗里多尼亞公司發布的《世界生物塑料》研究報告稱,全球對生物塑料和生物可再生塑料的需求將每年增長19%,到2017年將達96萬噸。

      弗里多尼亞分析師KentFurst表示:“基本上所有的地區市場都將出現需求的穩步增長。”最有可能的推動因素包括消費者對可持續材料的日益青睞,塑料加工商和復合生產商更多地使用生物塑料,而且新產品開發為生物塑料帶來了更多新用途。

     

      但盡管需求將現增長,弗里多尼亞認為到2022年,生物塑料仍將只占總體塑料市場的不到1%。Furst預測說:“生物塑料行業的成功最終將取決于價格和性能因素,而且只有當生物塑料在價格上與傳統塑料樹脂接近時,大批量的生物塑料生產才可能發生。”

     

      據預計,日常使用的塑料制品(如塑料袋)監管規定的日益嚴格將會推動市場對淀粉基生物塑料需求的增加。而剛剛投入商業化的生物版本的常見塑料,如聚乙烯和聚丙烯,有望在需求量上出現最快的增長。

     

      在2012年,西歐是生物塑料消費量最大的區域市場,消費量達212000噸,占到全球需求總量的一半以上。

    臺新投顧研究部協理黃文清表示,全球生技股最近再啟動漲勢,那斯達克生技指數領先全球股市續創新高。在新藥、原料藥、醫材三大生技族群中,臺新尤其看好獲利穩定的醫材族群。

     

    醫材市場究竟有多大,根據據國際調研組織BMI統計,2015年全球醫療器材市場將從2012年的3,046億美元成長到3,684億美元。工研院IEK也表示,隨著美國量化寬松(QE)逐步退場,今年景氣復蘇趨勢確立,醫材市場更是矚目焦點。

     

    黃文清表示,醫材族群積極切入國際大廠,除了醫材族群本身技術領先,加上美國醫療改革帶來長線商機,都將使醫材族群獲利相當穩定。另外,因為獲利穩定可望增加投資人參與除權息意愿。

     

    大華投顧分析師蔡正華指出,觀察新藥族群股價表現,可區分出兩大區塊。專注在研發治療可能有致命性疾病的藥廠,股價多飛奔到百元以上,例如基亞、臺微體等大廠。

            Look out, super glue and paint thinner. Thanks to new dynamic materials developed at the University of Illinois, removable paint and self-healing plastics soon could be household products.

            The key advantage of using this material is that it's catalyst-free and low-temperature, and can be healed multiple times, these are very nice materials for internal cracks. This can heal the crack before it causes major problems by propagating. Other self-healing material systems have focused on solid, strong materials. However, the new study uses softer elastic materials made of polyurea, one of the most widely used classes of polymers in consumer goods such as paints, coatings, elastics and plastics.

            After the polymer is cut or torn, the researchers press the two pieces back together and let the sample sit for about a day to heal -- no extra chemicals or catalysts required. The materials can heal at room temperature, but the process can be sped up by curing at slightly higher temperatures (37 degrees Celsius, or about body temperature). The polymer bonds back together on the molecular level nearly as strongly as before it was cut. In fact, tests found that some healed samples, stretched to their limits, tore in a new place rather than the healed spot, evidence that the samples had healed completely.

            The researchers use commercially available ingredients to create their polymer. By slightly tweaking the structure of the molecules that join up to make the polymer, they can make the bonds between the molecules longer so that they can more easily pull apart and stick back together -- the key for healing. This molecular-level re-bonding is called dynamic chemistry.

            Dynamic chemistry has been explored in some other polymers, but those materials tend to be for specialized applications or laboratory settings, rather than the conventional polymers used commercially. By focusing on consumer materials and using readily available ingredients, the researchers hope that manufacturers could easily integrate dynamic materials.

            Now that they've established the chemistry required, the researchers are exploring how dynamic polyurea could bolster different applications. For example, they could fine-tune the mixture so that a polyurethane coating or paint could be removable.

    Hedge fund Third Point LLC (New York) said that it has taken a stake in Dow Chemical and urged management to evaluate a spinoff of its petrochemical operations.  

    In a letter to investors, Third Point CEO Daniel Loeb called on Dow to hire advisors to conduct an assessment of whether its current petrochemical strategy maximizes profits and aligns with Dow’s goal of transforming into a specialty chemicals company. “The review should explicitly explore whether separating Dow’s petrochemical businesses via a spin-off would drive greater stakeholder value.”

    Third Point did not disclose the actual size of the stake, but says Dow is now its largest current investment. Sources put the size of the investment at $1.3 billion, a roughly 2.3% stake based on Dow's current market capitalization. Third Point has about $14 billion in assets under management.

    A Dow spokesperson says the company welcomes “all constructive input with a common goal of enhancing long-term value” for shareholders. Loeb says that Dow has underperformed peers over the past decade, generating a return of 46% including dividends. The results reflect a “poor operational track record across multiple business segments, a history of under-delivering relative to management’s guidance and expectations, and the ill-timed acquisition of Rohm and Haas,” Loeb says. 

    Loeb notes that over the past five years, the shale revolution in North America has led to a boom in natural gas liquids production which has dramatically reduced raw material costs, while China and other emerging market economies have aggressively grown downstream derivatives capacity.

    “This combination has led to significant upstream margin expansion in North America where Dow is the largest ethylene producer, and a commoditization of numerous downstream derivatives margins,” Loeb says. “Dow’s current petrochemical strategy seems misaligned with the changed landscape.  Our analysis suggests that Dow’s downstream migration strategy within petrochemicals has not yielded material benefits so far and instead may be a significant drag on profitability."

            LG Chem, which is an affiliate of South Korean conglomerate LG Group, intends to develop the AA & SAP business as the core business of group, it said.

    “SAP is mainly for making diapers and Europe is the most concentrated region of our export at the moment,” the LG Chem spokesperson said.

    Meanwhile, he said, some manufacturing sectors are losing their competitiveness to Southeast Asian countries because of a diminishing demographic dividend, with the country nearing an reflection point regarding population growth.

            Several key leadership changes were announced this week. Air Products announced on Thursday that its CEO John McGlade will retire in 2014 and the company will name three new independent directors to its board of directors. McGlade will continue to serve as chairman and CEO during the search process and then as chairman for an agreed-upon transition period in 2014. 

            Wolfgang Büchele, Kemira's president and CEO, announced today that he will resign from his current position to become the CEO of Linde. Büchele will continue in his present role until 30 April 2014. The board of directors at KMG Chemicals, a specialty chemical producer, says that it has appointed Christopher Fraser as the company’s president and CEO, effective immediately. PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC; Bangkok) says that the company's board of directors, in a meeting held on 20 September, appointed Bowon Vongsinudom as the new CEO of PTTGC. Orica (Melbourne) says that Andrew Larke, currently executive global head/strategy and planning at the company, will become executive global head/chemicals while still maintaining his existing responsibilities.

            ACC’s September chemical activity barometer (CAB) is at the highest level since June 2008—forecasting an upside to the US economy and economic expansion into 2015, ACC says. On a three-month moving average basis, the September reading increased 0.4% over August. Year-on-year, the CAB is up 3.3%. Continued improvements have been reported in construction-related plastic resins, coatings, and pigments—indicating strength in housing, ACC says. These areas are likely to continue to grow, though at a moderated pace, suggesting that the rapid gains typically seen early in a recovery have given way to slower growth.

            Albemarle will reorganize its business structure, reducing the number of reporting segments at the company from three to two, effective 1 January 2014, it says. The two business units will be called performance chemicals and catalyst solutions. The performance chemicals unit will encompass Albemarle’s brominated flame retardants, minerals and custom manufacturing businesses, while the catalyst solutions unit will house various catalyst businesses and antioxidants. Also this week,Evonik Industries said that its supervisory board has unanimously passed resolutions to sharpen the group's focus on specialty chemicals and its future growth targets and to reduce the size of Evonik's executive board from six to four members. Within the executive board, operational responsibility for the entire specialty chemicals business will be transferred to Patrik Wohlhauser, effective 1 January 2014.

            Walmart yesterday announced a plan to phase out 10 hazardous chemicals in cleaning, personal-care, and cosmetic products sold at the store, although the company did not disclose the specific chemicals. The initiative, part of a broader sustainability push, will be launched in January 2014, when the company will begin monitoring progress on reduction and elimination of the 10 chemicals. Walmart is the world’s largest consumer retailer.

            The initiative also includes ingredient disclosure for Walmart’s suppliers, which include many of the largest personal-care goods and chemicals manufacturers. Suppliers must provide online ingredient disclosure for products sold at Walmart starting in January 2015, the retailer says. In January 2016, Walmart will begin publicly reporting the progress of eliminating and reducing the 10 chemicals, and, in January 2018, suppliers must begin disclosing the chemicals on packaging.

            Environmental groups have applauded Walmart's program. “[Thursday's] announcement is yet another indication that consumers, advocates, and business are working together to fill the void left by Washington’s inaction on chemical safety,” says Sarah Vogel, director/environmental health at Environmental Defense Fund (EDF; New York). EDF has worked with Walmart to develop the list of chemicals, EDF says, which were chosen based on assessments of hazard and availability of safe alternatives. Walmart says it will “regularly review” the list to determine if new chemicals should be included.

    ACC says "many of our members have been talking with Walmart about issues related to chemical safety, product performance, innovation and the significant amount of regulatory oversight of home and personal care products." The group adds that "assessing product safety is more than just noting the presence of a chemical substance in a formulation. It must also include considerations of product use, user exposure to the chemical in the product, and the functionality of the chemical in the formulation, as well as the unintended consequences of the removal of a chemical from a product."

    Walmart also says it will apply some of its private-brand cleaning products for inclusion in EPA’s Design for the Environment labeling program, which commends safe and environmentally friendly consumer products. The retailer will identify products that can be included in the program in starting in January of next year.

    Walmart has periodically rolled out plans to phase out certain chemicals for several years. In 2011, it said it would phase out some flame retardants. In 2006, it targeted the pesticides propoxur and permethrin, as well as nonylphenol ethoxylates in cleaning products. At the time, Walmart said it would identify an additional 17 chemicals of concern; however, the company eventually backtracked on that policy.

            Endo produces branded drugs, generics and medical devices. Two of the company’s bestselling painkiller products, Opana ER (oxymorphone extended release) and Lidoderm (lidocaine) patches, are due to lose patent protection within the next few months. In an attempt to cut costs, Endo has already reduced its workforce by 15% this year, and is considering selling its HealthTronics urinary business. 

            Boca makes speciality generics in niche areas, including controlled substances and semi-solid drug forms. In a statement, Endo said Boca’s products were an ‘ideal fit’ for its own generics division, Qualitest. The deal is expected to close this year.

    The price of oil closed above $109 a barrel, its highest level in a year and a half, as the U.S. edged closer to intervening in Syria's civil war.

    Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Tuesday that American forces were ready to act on any order by President Barack Obama to strike Syria in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons in the conflict. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that it was "undeniable" that the Syrian government used chemical weapons.

    The U.S. Navy has four destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea within range of targets inside Syria. The U.S. also has warplanes in the region.

    U.S. benchmark oil for October delivery rose $3.09, or 2.9 percent, to close at $109.01 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's the highest closing price since February 2012, although oil remains far below its record close of $145.29 a barrel, reached on July 3, 2008.

    While Syria is not a major oil supplier, traders are concerned that the conflict may draw in Iran, a key ally of Syria and a big oil producer. The Middle East nation also shares a border with Iraq, another larger oil producer in the region.

    "The issue, of course, is not Syria itself but certainly, factions within Syria that are clients of Iran," said Addison Armstrong a director at Tradition Energy, an independent energy research firm.

    The price of oil was also boosted Tuesday by reports that protesters stopped production at key oil fields in western Libya on Monday. The chairman of Libya's National Oil Corp., Nuri Berruien, said production in the North African nation had slumped to about 200,000 barrels a day, about an eighth of its capacity, according to Bloomberg News.

    The price of oil is has surged more than 15 percent in the last three months on concern that civil war in Syria and unrest in Egypt could disrupt production and exports, especially in Libya and Iraq. The threat of spreading violence could block important supply routes.

    "The political uncertainty across Middle East has dominated the oil market in the last few months," said a report from Sucden Financial Research in London.

    Brent Crude, the benchmark for international crudes, was up $3.11 to $114.28 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

    In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

    — Heating oil added 8 cents to $3.17 per gallon.

    — Natural gas rose 2 cents to $3.57 per 1,000 cubic feet.

    — Wholesale gasoline rose 8 cents to $2.91 per gallon.

    University of Michigan research team members said the principle also could be used to produce other valuable chemicals such as plastics.

    "We're hoping that biofuels made in such an efficient way can eventually replace current petroleum-based fuels," said Xiaoxia "Nina" Lin, assistant professor of chemical engineering and leader of the research.

    Gallon for gallon, isobutanol gives off 82 percent of the heat energy gasoline provides when burned, compared to ethanol's 67 percent. Ethanol also has a tendency to absorb water, corroding pipelines and damaging engines, but isobutanol doesn't mix easily with water. While ethanol serves as a mixer in the gasoline infrastructure today, many researchers argue that isobutanol could be a replacement.

    Equally important, this system makes isobutanol from inedible plant materials, so fuel production won't drive up food costs. Lin's team used corn stalks and leaves, but their ecosystem should also be able to process other agricultural byproducts and forestry waste.

    While much previous research has focused on trying to create a "superbug" that could tackle the whole job of processing waste plant materials into biofuels, Lin and her colleagues argue that a team of microbial specialists can do better.

    The fungus Trichoderma reesei is already very good at breaking down tough plant material into sugars. Escherichia coli,meanwhile, is relatively easy for researchers to genetically modify. James Liao's lab at the University of California-Los Angeles provided E. coli bacteria that had been engineered to convert sugars into isobutanol.

    The Lin group put both microbe species into a bioreactor and served up corn stalks and leaves. Colleagues at Michigan State University had pre-treated the roughage to make it easier to digest.

    "If you've ever had puffed rice cereal, it's somewhat analogous," said Jeremy Minty, first author of the paper to be published in theProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and a recent doctoral graduate in Lin's lab.

    The fungi turned the roughage into sugars that fed both microbe species with enough left over to produce isobutanol. The team managed to get 1.88 grams of isobutanol per liter of fluid in the ecosystem, the highest concentration reported to date for turning tough plant materials into biofuels. They also converted a large proportion of the energy locked in the corn stalks and leaves to isobutanol -- 62 percent of the theoretical maximum.

    The harmonious coexistence of the fungi and bacteria, with stable populations, was a key success of the experiment.

    "A lot of times, one species will dominate the culture and the other will die off," Minty said. "This is a common problem when you're trying to create these systems."

    Convincing the microbes to play nicely pays off.

    "You can put everything in one pot," Lin said. "The capital investment will be much lower, and also the operating cost will be much lower, so hopefully this will make the whole process much more likely to become economically viable."

    Lin's team used game theory to analyze the relationship between the fungi and bacteria. Breaking cellulose down into sugar is hard work, so T. reesei's tendency to do this and then share the spoils mark it as a cooperator. Meanwhile, the E. coli use the sugars without offering the fungus anything in return, which makes it a cheater.

    Even so, the bacteria didn't take over the colony because the fungi produce the sugars near their cell membranes, which gives them the first crack at using the sugars. The researchers can control E. coli's advantage by tweaking how quickly the bacteria grow.

    Minty and others in Lin's group are now trying to improve on their energy conversion rate and increase the tolerance of the T. reesei and E. coli to isobutanol. The fuel is toxic, but higher concentrations will drive down the cost of isolating the fuel.

    "We're really excited about this technology," Minty said. "The U.S. has the potential to sustainably produce 1 billion tons or more of biomass annually, enough to produce biofuels that could displace 30 percent or more of our current petroleum production."

    Moreover, by engineering the bacteria differently, they believe their system could produce a variety of petroleum-based chemicals in a sustainable way.

    Although the fuel-cell sector may finally be taking off, the German chemical giant BASF has decided to exit one part of the business and close a facility in Somerset, N.J. The move will affect about 25 employees.

    It was with some fanfare that BASF opened the $10 million Somerset facility in 2009. The company invited the press and the governor of New Jersey to see a factory where it would produce membrane electrode assemblies for high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane, or PEM, fuel cells.

    Composed of electrodes, catalysts, and membranes, the assemblies allow hydrogen to react with oxygen to generate heat and electricity. BASF primarily targeted stationary applications such as backup generators and combined heat and power systems.

    The company now says such fuel cells face competition from many other technologies, including internal combustion engine and microturbine generators and other types of fuel cells. Instead, BASF will focus on supplying catalysts and adsorbents for a broad range of fuel cells.

    High-temperature PEM fuel cells promise lower sensitivity to impurities in fuels than do their low-temperature cousins, according to Dan Carter, an analyst with the London-based market intelligence firm Fuel Cell Today. But problems with longevity and durability have prevented the high-temperature cells from significantly penetrating the market, Carter says.

    Overall, the fuel-cell industry had its best year ever in 2012, Carter says, thanks to residential installations in Japan and growth in portable chargers for electronics. Hyundai launched the world’s first commercial fuel-cell vehicle earlier this year, and Carter expects other automakers to follow.

    From October, the import duties will revert to their lower level, making imports cheaper and threatening the market share of local producers.

     

    "We are extremely concerned," Fernando Figueiredo, president of chemical industry association Abiquim told Valor Econômico. "The trade deficit in chemicals could reach US$33bn this year."

     

    Last year Brazil recorded a record trade deficit of US$28.1bn in chemical products.

     

    The cut in import duties affects 20 chemical products involving seven major chemical companies: Oxiteno (part of conglomerate Ultrapar (NYSE: UGP)), Elekeiroz, Basf (NYSE: BF), Braskem (NYSE: BAK), Unigel, Dow (NYSE: DOW) and Lanxess.

     

    Some companies are considering closing production units, Figueiredo said.

     

    According to Abiquim, despite the higher import duties, imports of the 20 products increased to US$954mn in the first half of the year, 6% more than in the same period in 2012.

     

    Henri Slezynger, president of Unigel, said the depreciation of the Brazilian real against the dollar would not provide protection for local products from imports, as chemical prices are dollarized because the main raw material, naphtha, is priced in dollars.

            Last year the Mississippi Polymer Institute partnered with NASA to develop a new tool for evaluating cleaning solutions/solvents that are more environmentally friendly than the ones currently used on NASA’s rocket engine parts.

            After countless hours of design and evaluation, MPI provided NASA with the prescribed model.

    Steven Whitacre, MPI’s technical specialist, was responsible for designing an evaluation test method that incorporated a scaled-down prototype to simulate a rocket engine’s internal features for assessing the effectiveness of the cleaning solutions.

            Whitacre not only spent time formulating the test method but also designed and built multiple solvent evaluation fixtures on MPI’s 3D printer. MPI specializes in 3D printing and testing services at USM, and was fully equipped to handle these needs for NASA on this project.

            Once optimal prototypes were formulated and created, the models were taken to a machinist, and they were re-created into stainless steel fixtures. These fixtures were artificially soiled using a contamination solution, to replicate the grimy build up that can accumulate on rocket engine parts during manufacturing and lead to fires if not precision-cleaned before placing in service. This enabled MPI to test each cleaning solution in the fixtures more accurately.

            MPI serves as the industrial outreach entity for The University of Southern Mississippi and its School of Polymers and High Performance Materials. Its mission is to support the growth of high tech businesses across the state.

    BP is planning a substantial investment programme at its Sullom Voe oil terminal in the Shetland Islands. The terminal, which currently employs 220 staff and around 300 contractors, is expected to have 1,000 people working on the site over the next eight years or more. The company is currently exploring options for housing 400 new workers.
    Two large-scale projects are set to extend the life of the terminal to 2040 and beyond – the £3 billion Schiehallion development and the £4.5 billion Clair Ridge project.

    Sullom Voe is also working with Total, which is building a separate facility next door, on plans to take 40,000 barrels per day of liquid condensate from the gas the French company will be piping in from the Laggan-Tormore fielsd west of the islands.

    Sullom Voe is already more than 10 years beyond its design life limit and BP is spending £100 million the refurbishment of the facility.

    The oil major is also planning to build a £500 million gas plant to sweeten gas coming from both east and west of Shetland, taking out the hydrogen sulphide to make it ready for export via the Magnus field.

    The Magnus platform itself, 100 miles north east of Shetland, is due for a major facelift with an accommodation barge housing 200 workers due to be stationed offshore next February.

    According to the Shetland News, BP is finding it difficult finding engineers to work in Shetland and has launched a major recruitment drive to attract qualified staff to work on the project.
